The Women's Cancer Detection Society is a local charity based in the breast cancer screening unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead. It was founded in 1964 to help women in the North East. The WCDS carried out pioneering work in breast cancer screening by running a charity screening service for nearly 20 years. In 1988 the NHS Breast Screening Programme was established and the Charity has since given support by providing equipment and grants for research. The Gateshead Breast Screening Programme screens women living in Gateshead, South Tyneside, Durham and Sunderland.
